TIM VAN SOMEREN

Tim is one of the UK’s leading multi-camera directors.

He specialises in directing live music, theatre capture, special events, and TV entertainment formats.

Tim has been directing live music performances for over twenty five years, first learning his trade at MTV in the 1990’s. He has filmed many of the major recording artists of the last two decades including Burna Boy, the Police, Paul McCartney, Anitta, One Direction, Camila Cabello, Drake, Pearl Jam, Elbow, Pharrell, Alesso, The Killers, Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Girls Aloud, Calvin Harris, Alicia Keys, Marshmello, P Diddy, Neil Young, OneRepublic, Elton John and many, many others.

He is also known for filming multi-camera drama productions, directing cinema broadcasts for The National Theatre, The Donmar Warehouse, the BBC and others. His credits include Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof starring Sienna Miller, Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein, Four different Macbeths starring Sir Kenneth Branagh, David Tennant, Rory Kinnear and Ralph Fiennes, The NT’s acclaimed revivals of Follies and Amadeus, Wind in the Willows at the Palladium, Juliet Binoche in The Barbican's Antigone, Girl from the North Country on Broadway, and many more.

In Special Events and Award Shows, Tim’s credits include The 2022, ‘23 and (forthcoming) ‘24 Champions League Final Opening Ceremonies, The Mercury Music Prize, MTV Award Shows in Asia and Africa, Children in Need, The UAE's 40th birthday celebration, The BBC Proms, The 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremonies, and more. He has also directed commercial projects for clients as diverse as Burberry, Nike, Top Shop, Coach, Miele, Honda, Sainsburys, Guinness, Adidas, and Nokia. Tim will be directing the opening and closing ceremonies of EURO24 for UEFA.

Tim’s TV credits are almost too numerous to mention but encompass Robot Wars, The Great Pottery Throwdown, Wild Things, A League of Their Own, Top of the Pops, The Magicians, The Friday Night Project, CD:uk, Let's Dance for Comic Relief, The Rob Brydon Show, Sara Cox Between the Covers and a host of others

Tim has won numerous awards including the Prix Italia, the Rose D’Or, a Grierson and an RTS, and he has been nominated for a BAFTA, a Broadcast Award, a D&AD and a Cannes Media Lion.

Tim lives in London with his wife, Chloe, and two children.
